Here's a very experimental version of the bumps chart which is implemented (in JavaScript using the Raphaƫl library) in the browser, rather than being downloaded from the server as an image. More discussion under: Client-side Bumps Charts
The advantages are:
- Once a few largish gobs of JavaScript have been downloaded and squirreled away in the browser's cache the amount data to be transferred on each update is quite small (moderately significant if you're paying for 3G bandwidth).
- There's also the option of extracting the data from the HTML scores page (where JavaScript same-origin restrictions permit) meaning almost no special coding on the server and use of data which is even more likely to already be in the browser's cache.
- There's the potential for a lot more flexibility in what is displayed. Try the linky-buttons below for some simple examples and try hovering the mouse over the glider/pilot identification strings on the right of the chart.
- Within bounds, the size of the chart adapts to the page width available.
I've given it a bit of try out in Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer but any comments on how well it does/doesn't work on various systems are welcome. Irritatingly, I don't think it'll work on Android based 'phones but I'm moderately hopeful it will on iPhones/iPods/iPads.
